Introduction
“In questions of science, the authority of a thousand is not worth the humble reasoning of a single individual,” is a quote from Galileo Galilei. Galileo Galilei is mostly famous for astronomy, but he was also a great inventor. Galileo Galilei changed our point of view of the solar system.

Early Life
Galileo Galilei was very influenced by science, even in his early life. Galileo Galilei was born on February 15th 1564, the same year as William Shakespeare. Galileo was the oldest son of Vincenzo Galilei, the musician. In 1570, they moved to Florence, Italy, and he attended a teen monastery school in the 1570’s. About ten years later, Galileo attended the University of Pisa to study medicine, as his father wished. Later Galileo realized that he was better at math and physics, so he entreated his father to let him study mathematics. In 1590, Galileo questioned the theory that heavy objects would fall faster than lighter objects. He then proved it wrong by dropping a heavy ball and a light ball at the same time from the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Galileo was right, the light and the heavy ball landed on the ground at the same time. All of the many things that Galileo made, were just the beginning to his inventions.

Inventions
Galileo Galilei made many gadgets using his mathematical skills. His first invention was a compass. He invented this compass to procure money to support his family. Galileo’s compass was very helpful to the military, because it could make arithmetical calculations and geometric operations easily. It had two legs, conected by a disk that had many scales. Galileo’s second invention was a thermometer. The thermometer works by laws of gravity and density. There are several glass bubbles inside a glass tube, each bubble has a different density, therefore they float according to the temperature. Galileo’s most popular invention is the telescope. Although he did not invent the idea of the telescope, he made his own version of it. He designed it by putting two different sized lenses and put them on either side of a tube. Galileo also invented the microscope, using the science that he used to make the telescope. Galileo made many ingenious inventions.

Astronomy
Galileo’s main occupation was an astronomer. Galileo got his job when he invented his telescope. When Galileo looked through his telescope, he saw that the moon’s surface was not smooth, but bumpy. He also saw four moons circling Jupiter. He published a book on his discoveries of space called, The Starry Messenger. Yet Galileo also saw that Venus went through phases, like the moon does. Therefore he made a theory that the sun was in the center of the universe, not the Earth. When he started to spread his theory around, the church was suspicious. They were embarrassed because Galileo was making people believe that what the church taught was wrong. Therefore they told Galileo to stop spreading around and Galileo was not an astronomer for a long time, the duke invited him to come live with him, then he published another book, called Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, which was also about his theory. Then someone told the church that Galileo had made fun of the duke in his book, therefore he was sent to trial, and eventually was sent to jail. 300 years later, the church excused Galileo, and said his theory was true. Even though Galileo is dead, his discoveries and inventions still thrive.

Conclusion
Galileo Galilei was an amazing inventor and astronomer. Galileo Galilei changed the way we look at the solar system. Galileo’s inventions were very important because we might not have as powerful a telescope as we do now, and many more things were inspired by Galileo or his inventions. Without Galileo, we may not know that our solar system orbits the sun.
